Math is a crucial academic skill, and it’s useful in everyday life too. Luckily, just like encouraging reading, there are many things you can do to motivate your child to practise their math. Follow these tips from The Tutoring Center in Kansas City to help your child learn to love math.

Set a good example

Children mimic much of their parents’ behavior, so tackling math problems with positivity yourself can have a great effect on their outlook and attitude. Make sure to never let them hear you say a math problem is too difficult, or that you find math too tough, or they might view the subject as too difficult for them.

Offer help

Many students don’t like studying math for the simple reason that they find it too hard. Having you around to offer reassurance and assistance with any particularly difficult problems may well offer your child the safe feeling they need to study confidently. Make sure not to simply solve your child’s math problems for them, as they need to learn for themselves; instead, talk through math problems with them to help them forge a deep conceptual understanding of the math behind their homework.

Have fun

There are many ways to make math fun. If you have access to a computer, laptop, or smartphone, there are hundreds if not thousands of educational apps that have been tailor-made to make learning fun, so take advantage of those. Of course, you can also adapt board games to teach math; simply add rules requiring players to answer a math problem before taking their turn or similar. The best thing about creating your own games is that you can tailor the math to suit what your child is studying at the moment.

Exercise math muscles

Math, like any other skill, takes practice. Fit a little into every day without your child even noticing by asking them to help you with totaling the cost of the groceries, getting them to work out how long they need to save their allowance to afford a particular toy, and so on.

If your child is having difficulty with math, The Tutoring Center’s Geniuses in Training Math Program can offer the support they need to excel. We also provide one-on-one help with any other academic areas of struggle, so call 816-781-0000 to organize tutoring in Kansas City today.
