Fight the Summer Slide

It's easy for students to lose valuable information in just months even though they worked hard to master it all year long. To prevent this from happening during your child's summer break, be prepared to keep them busy with some fun and educational summer activities.

Summer Reading

Get your child excited to read this summer by enrolling them in a summer reading program at your local library. Most libraries hold some sort of program that encourages students to read during their summer break by providing them with incentives that keep them motivated. If your local library isn't hosting one this summer, create your own version at home and get your child excited to reach their reading goals.

Practice Math This Summer

Students may not like the idea of doing math over the summer and parents may be intimidated by the thought of teaching their child a subject they're not comfortable with. Luckily, math practice can be easy. To start, download some fun math apps and games that your child can play during car rides or long wait times, like the checkout line at the grocery store. You can also have your child practice skills like fractions and percentages by having them calculate discounts while out back to school shopping.

Get Outdoors

While academics are a must during the summer, so is outdoor time. Instead of allowing your child to spend all summer in front of the television, enroll them in a sport or class that keeps them active. If your child isn't fond of these types of classes, going hiking, playing basketball in the driveway, or riding bikes around the block together can be just as great as long as they keep moving.
