Learning Distractions and How to Combat Them

It's not unusual for students to lose their focus and get distracted by a number of things while trying to study or complete homework. Although this may not sound like a big deal, it can turn into a serious problem for some students. To help your child concentrate on their work, identify their distractors and work to eliminate them together.

Internal Distractors

Internal distractors are often harder to spot because they live in your child's head. Although there isn't a physical object causing them to lose focus, their thoughts and worries can be just as distractive. Anxiety about a big exam, self-doubt, and worries in their personal life can all cause them to lose focus. If you notice your child is having a hard to paying attention to what's in front of them, talk to them about their concerns. Sometimes, just talking to someone can help clear their mind a bit.

External Distractors

External distractors can be a lot easier to pinpoint because they tend to be physical objects or people who cause your child to lose focus. Whether it's their cellphone notifications or a family member constantly interrupting their study time, help your child find ways to focus. Creating a designated study space where cellphones are not allowed and setting quiet hours at home can help your child stay focused for a few hours a day.
